FTP Tutorial
When you sign up for a web hosting that allows FTP they will give you the information you need to use for your FTP. To use FTP you'll need a "ftp client". Some web editors come with a "ftp client" already installed but if it doesn't or you just use notepad to make your pages then you can get a free "ftp client" here. It's free and you can use this software to upload your files using FTP.
For AOL Members using their FTP.
When uploading your files using the free FTP space provided by aol.
Your Host Name will be members.aol.com
Your User ID will be anonymous
Your Password will be the password you use to sign on to aol
Your Directory Path will your aol username so it will look someting like this /yourusername
Once you get your "ftp client" then use the information your webhost provided you. This is a list of of the options you'll need when using FTP.

1. Host Name: which is the server name or number your project is published to, it will be something like this ftp.yourdomain.com
2. User ID: which will most likely be your username your using to login to your webhosting account.
3. Password: which is usually the same password you use to login or sometimes it's a seperate password, just depending on your hosting.
4. Directory Path: which is the file path where your files will be uploaded to, it will look something like this /public_html/folder If your not sure what your directory path is please ask your webhosting provider
Using IE to transfer files to your webspace with FTP.
Also another way to transfer your files using FTP without using an "ftp client" is through Internet Explorer. Just open up IE then type in your host name. For example ftp.yourdomain.com. Then a box will appear asking you for your username and password. You should then be logged in and be able to view all your files and/or folders on your webspace. Click on the directory (folder) where you want your site to be uploaded on. Then open up your documents and find the folder where your site is saved and then drag that folder and drop it into IE in the directory (folder) where you want your files to be. This doesn't work with free hosts only if you use a paid hosting.
When it's time for you to upload your site you'll need to use FTP. What is FTP you ask. Well FTP means file transfer protocol which is one way of transfering files from one place to another. Some webhosts will let you use FTP and some will not. Mostly free webhosts use another way for you to upload your site but some free hosting and mostly all paid hosting let you use FTP.
